The month of May is recognized as “The Month of the Ocean” by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 57, series of 1998 signed by then President Joseph Estrada. The proclamation highlights the conservation, protection, and sustainable management of Philippine coastal and ocean resources in ensuring a better future for humanity.

The celebration pins the 26th celebration with the theme “Develop a Sustainable and Equitable Blue Economy” which is anchored in the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) message “The Science We Need for the Ocean We Want”. The Blue Economy is sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and jobs and ocean ecosystem health. The Blue Economy encompasses many activities such as: renewable energy, tourism, climate change, fisheries, waste management and maritime transport. (worldbank.org/oceans)
